We’ve gotten used to putting mostly exotic plants under “superfoods,” many of which the world only discovered on a wider scale fairly recently—think maca, chlorella, açaí, quinoa, etc. These are the ones we’ll focus on here. At Lifefood, though, we also believe plenty of “superfoods” grow in our own fields and forests—and we often overlook them. You can probably guess which: garlic, onion, cabbage, flaxseed, blueberries, raspberries… There are more than enough, and we’ll definitely cover them, too. They’re beautifully presented in the book Příběhy českých superpotravin by Veronika Hanzlíková. You’ll also find them in Lifefood products, for example in our Life Crackers. Still, it isn’t all that simple.

Why eat superfoods?

People say the nutrient content of today’s everyday diet is declining. Some even claim that without supplements we can’t provide the body with a truly complete diet. The epidemic of various allergies, intolerances, and lifestyle diseases might seem to back that up. We are what we eat. No surprise there. Just look at a typical field—if we’re lucky and it isn’t rapeseed this time, we’ll still see plants growing out of dead earth that’s no longer real soil, but rather a poor mass that serves as an undignified plant holder. The plants live and grow only thanks to the “coatings” of chemical sprays. Nothing great or nourishing for our bodies can logically come from that. If we don’t want to load up on chemicals, superfoods are one way out. Another is to eat as many foods as possible in organic quality. Not only do we give the body real nutrients, we also support organic farmers who restore and keep the landscape alive—for us and our children. But back to superfoods.

Incan power of nature

The original plants that scientists began calling superfoods were bred by the Incas. For millennia, Incan cultures cultivated special crops that gave them the strength and endurance to survive in harsh conditions. The Incas lived where today you find the endless plains and mountains of South America—Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina. Their knowledge gradually spread worldwide. Today, Peru is sometimes called the “Garden of Superfoods,” and we can benefit from these crops as well—most often in the form of ground powders.

Tereza-in-the-fields-in-Peru-1000-1000.jpg 227.48 KB

Not all “superfoods” are created equal - what to watch for

These plants often grow in harsh conditions and, as the saying goes, have a very “tough root” - here quite literally. (In the photo above, Lifefood founder Tereza Havrlandová stands in a maca field right after sowing; you can clearly see the demanding conditions. The field sits at 4,300 m above sea level.) They carry resilience within them - and pass it on to those who consume them.
What you need to watch - unsurprisingly - is organic quality. Big agribusiness smells profit in the “superfoods” trend. So these crops start being grown in places they don’t traditionally belong, using non-traditional methods - and with chemistry in the mix. In a shop you might find two quinoas that look identical, yet one is a true, nutrient-rich superfood, while the other is a far less valuable mass-produced substitute.
We bring this up because we follow the issue closely and think it matters. At Lifefood, we work only with small farmers or cooperatives. Beyond what we’ve already mentioned - i.e., organic quality and original growing regions - there’s another key point for us: we know where our (and your) money goes. Into families, education, housing, community development. In short, personal relationships with farmers matter to us.

superfoods_bowl.jpg 687.65 KB

Which Superfoods for What?

Let’s think about what we eat, its quality, and where it comes from. Superfoods like baobab, maca, lucuma, guaraná, açaí, etc., can help during times of increased physical or mental load, and they also work as add-ins to everyday recipes. Each has different uses and a distinct taste. Many can serve as great, vitamin-rich alternatives to sugar - for example lucuma (used in Peru even for ice cream) or baobab, which you can also eat on its own. You can add them to smoothies, puddings, cakes, or yogurt. Guaraná is a natural pick-me-up said to be 2–3 times stronger than caffeine, with a slower, steadier release into the bloodstream. We make a great bar with it.
Many of them - baobab, for instance - are high in vitamin C, which is essential for the body. It supports normal hormonal function, contributes to collagen formation, cartilage and bone health, and supports normal blood vessel function, etc. For vegans, it’s important that it also increases iron absorption.
We also add superfoods to Lifebar Original bars and to the Life Crackers mentioned above, where you’ll find more of the Czech “superfoods” like cabbage, carrot, and herbs.
With or without superfoods - may every day be super!

"image/jpeg","https://be.lifefood.cz/storage/3/superfoods_2.jpg",[14
thumb","https://be.lifefood.cz/storage/3/conversions/superfoods_2-thumb.jpg","2025-10-16 17:33:48",1049818,"1
[22
2024-10-01 00:00:00
superfoods-bublina-nebo-nutnost","superfoods-hype-or-must-have",[],"Superfoods - hype or must-have?
"
Lollipops, candy, fries - over-sweet and over-salty treats attack our kids from all sides

No wonder a “plain” apple—or heaven forbid something green—loses its appeal. In raw food, which undergoes no chemical processing and is prepared at low temperatures (max 45 °C), a large amount of health-promoting substances is preserved in the most natural form. Living food is rich in vitamins and minerals such as beta-carotene, iron, etc., which naturally strengthen the immune system. It contains a high share of fiber and digestion-supporting enzymes. And it’s rich in proteins, which the body uses to produce energy and build tissues.

Nothing but RAW goodies!

Mothers of small children in particular will appreciate that a raw dish made from the best available ingredients is, by nature, clean, natural food. Raw treats contain no gluten, lactose, E-numbers, or any other fillers. Instead of refined sugar, sweetening is done with dates, other dried fruit, agave syrup, or yacon syrup with prebiotics. It’s worth making sure the dried fruit is truly raw and organic—most conventional dried fruit is typically dried at high temperatures and has nothing to do with raw quality. Into these “mix-ups,” you can add a bit of leafy greens (e.g., lettuce, spinach, lamb’s lettuce, parsley tops, or carrot greens). Leafy greens are among the most nutrient-dense vegetables and pair well with fruit. Some children are put off by the green color, so start with just a little and increase gradually. We also know how to look after the outdoors—you don’t have to wait for “Let’s Clean Up the Czech Republic” events; many of us already take trash bags on hikes or team up with neighbors to clean part of the city.

What we forget amid spring’s surge is inner cleanup. Over winter we tuned in, and now energy pours in. Sometimes it throws us into chaos and restlessness. We start running late again, getting super busy, chasing deadlines and budgets. As they say, the best time to meditate is when you don’t have time. Make time. Clear your head—and do it regularly. If for nothing else, do it because it pays off. “Measure twice, cut once,” as the saying goes. A clear head is effective and creative—and that’s what you want.

One last thought: embrace spring and the months ahead and place your trust in them. That’s why it’s still so rare. Ingredients are usually bought from dealers and importers, which is a challenge in itself if you care at all about origin. When you purchase ingredients directly from abroad, they typically pass through several intermediaries before reaching reliable quality control. A lot can happen along the way. There are countries where quality is last on the list and “papers” are forged. No surprise: the pressure for productivity is intense and money rules everything. Mass production harms everyone—consumers, because it lowers product quality, and growers, because it destroys relationships and soil. The only winners are export firms and their bank accounts. In these conditions, small farmers who do things differently struggle to survive. Long-term cooperation that gives them certainty is crucial. Their crops are worth it—chemical-free, nutrient-rich, and grown without destroying ecosystems. Their survival quite literally depends on demand from us, the customers.

Rapid mass production at the expense of quality

There’s a category that deserves special attention in this production machine: dried fruit. Mangoes, bananas, pineapples, cacao beans, and many nuts are typically dried at high temperatures and further processed. Mass production does not mean sun-drying by hand. As demand grows, the hunt is on for ever more economical ways to meet it. Slow sun-drying on metal trays is definitely not one of them - it lengthens the process, and in big business, time is money: labor, storage, etc. The price, as we know, is a loss of quality. A small farmer, by contrast, pulls out the trays, checks the sky, and starts drying.

Fairtrade in agriculture

Beyond the quality of raw materials, Lifefood pays attention to working conditions - these go hand in hand. The better people live and the more fairly they’re paid - so they and their families can live with dignity - the higher the quality of the products that pass through their hands. Certainty and fairness also ensure long-term, two-way cooperation that benefits both sides.

Brazil_2019.webp 171.92 KB

Return to small producers

As awareness grows about the need for sustainability - and about healthy eating as a basic condition for a healthy, happy life - supporting small farmers becomes crucial.
